Potential Site : Pine Dunes
The Pine Dunes Site
Pine Dunes Forest Preserve in Antioch features rolling hills and beautiful panoramic views of prairies, savannas and oak-hickory woodlands. The 956-acre preserve offers 2.8 miles of gravel trails along with four boardwalks, three scenic overlooks, a drinking fountain and a toilet. Trails here are open to walking, cycling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.
The trails at Pine Dunes connect to the Des Plaines River Trail along Russell Road to Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve in Wadsworth. Eventually, trails here will also connect to the regional Millennium Trail.
Approximately 70% of the land is upland habitat, while the remaining 30% is wetland communities. The Illinois Wildlife Action Plan and Chicago Wilderness Alliance have identified these habitats as critical nesting and foraging areas for a variety of birds and other wildlife species.
