Potential Site : Mill Creek

The Mill Creek Site

The 276-acre Mill Creek Forest Preserve is located in Old Mill Creek, near Stearns School Road. Currently, the site has no developed public access. Nearly 2.2 miles of Mill Creek meander through the preserve, flowing north before combining with North Mill Creek off-site and ultimately draining into the Des Plaines River in Sedge Meadow Forest Preserve. The site is primarily a cultural landscape with agriculture occupying the majority of the land. However, the site also contains woodlands, marshes and prairies adjacent to the creek that provide habitat and migration corridors for wildlife. Mill Creek offers significant opportunities for habitat restoration, and is identified in the Wetland Restoration & Preservation Plan (WRAPP) as having high functional value for its existing and potentially restorable wetlands with regards to floodwater storage, fish and wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration and nutrient transformation (ability to improve water quality).
